6-year-old dies after head-on crash with vehicle south of Smiths Falls

A man and child are dead after a multi-vehicle collision involving an ambulance south of Smiths Falls.

On Tuesday, Ontario Provincial Police said the child who was airlifted from the scene on Highway 15 near Otter Lake Park had died after he suffered critical injuries.

The incident happened on May 29 around 5:00 p.m. on the rural highway that stretches from the nation’s capital to Kingston. Police arrived to find that two vehicles and an ambulance were involved. Initial reports to police indicated the crash was head-on.

The driver of one vehicle, a 34-year-old man from Elizabethtown-Kitley, was pronounced dead at the scene. The young child travelling in the same vehicle was taken to hospital where he died.

The driver and passenger of the ambulance were taken to hospital with serious injuries. There were no patients on board the ambulance when the collision happened, the release notes.

Police said that a third vehicle involved sent the driver to hospital with minor injuries.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information or dashcam footage of the incident is asked to contact Leeds County OPP.
