Person caught riding in SUV trunk filming sports cars on Hwy. 417

A driver was charged with a serious offence after a person was seen sitting in the trunk of the moving vehicle on Highway 417.

An Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer was patrolling the roadway when they saw a vehicle pass with a person in the trunk around 8:30 p.m. earlier this week. The SUV had its tailgate open, and the person appeared to be filming two sports cars driving behind it.

The officer quickly pulled over the driver of the SUV who had their licence suspended for 30-days and the vehicle impounded. They are facing a $2,000 fine, six demerit points and a one-year driving prohibition if convicted.

The driver is facing a stunt driving charge, which under the Highway Traffic Act can be applied for several reasons, including speeding 50 km/h or more over the limit, doing donuts and carrying people in the trunk.

The passenger in the incident was also charged for occupying a position in a vehicle that did not have a seatbelt and fined $240.

This is the second incident in May where police caught people in the trunk of a moving vehicle. On May 8, Ottawa police charged a 17-year-old with stunt driving after a dozen teenagers were found riding in the back of a cube van.

As part of a targeted enforcement blitz across the city, police stopped a U-Haul van on Prince of Wales Drive near Maplehill Way. They found 12 teens, between the ages of 17 and 18, riding unsecured in the cargo portion of the van. Three other occupants were seated in the front, including one who was not wearing a seatbelt.
