Stabbing on Rideau Street an ‘unprovoked’ attack, police say

Ottawa police officers rushed to the scene of an assault on Wednesday after a man got on an OC Transpo bus with serious stab wounds.

Officials said in an update on Thursday that through the investigation they laid charges against one person in what they are calling an “unprovoked attack.”

It happened just before 11:00 a.m. near the 300 block of Rideau Street. The victim was approached by the suspect and stabbed. The man then stepped onto a city bus, which prompted emergency services to the scene.

Paramedics told CityNews that the man suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital in stable condition.

Ottawa police have laid charges against Mohamed Elhilo, 57. He is facing the offences of:

  • Assault cause bodily harm
  • Assault with a weapon
  • Possess weapon dangerous
  • Carry conceal weapon
