Police take 21 vehicles off the road following ‘safety blitz’

55 vehicles were inspected as part of a commercial vehicle “safety blitz” conducted on Wednesday at Fred Barrett Arena on Leitrim Road, with 21 vehicles taken off the road.
The Ottawa Police Service’s (OPS) Road Safety Unit, in collaboration with the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO) and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), carried out this inspection to ensure vehicle safety and compliance, said a news release.
The 21 vehicles taken off road represent 38 per cent of those inspected. The inspection also resulted in 45 charges laid, 2 licence plates removed and 1 improper annual commercial vehicle inspection sticker removed.
Police said the inspections exposed issues related to brakes, breakaway devices, wheels and tires, directional and brake signals, suspension components, load securement, a disqualified driver and an improper driver’s licence.
The 45 charges included offences surrounding improper tires, no daily trip inspections, expired annual inspections, improper brakes, CVOR-related issues, overweight vehicles, major defects, permit issues, various TSSEA offences and inoperative directional signals.
OPS South District Traffic and Neighbourhood Resource Team officers also assisted with the inspection initiative.
Police say commercial vehicle safety remains vital in keeping Ottawa’s roads safe for all.
