Witnesses needed in hostage-taking investigation in Kanata

Ottawa police are looking for people to come forward after a 14-hour hostage situation in a west end neighbourhood that resulted in a suspect being shot by an officer.
In a brief update on Tuesday morning, police said they are continuing to investigate the incident on Finlayson Crescent in the South March community on July 2.
“Investigators are seeking to speak with anyone who observed suspicious activity in the area of Finlayson Crescent and Goward Drive between June 29 and July 2,” the release reads.

Ottawa police were called to the home around 7:00 a.m. over concerns that a woman was believed being held against her will. Officers established a secure perimeter around the home and began negotiating to try to peacefully resolve the situation, the release reads.
After more than 14-hours of negotiation, a tactical unit entered the residence around 9 p.m. and rescued the woman, who was not physically harmed in the incident.
The province’s police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), is also looking into the incident because a 42-year-old man was injured by an Ottawa officer.
According to the SIU, the officer shot and wounded the man who is accused of holding a woman at knifepoint. He was taken to hospital for a non-life-threatening injury.
The watchdog investigates incidents involving police where an officer or member of the public is injured or killed in Ontario.
