Orléans recreation centre getting $6.3 million in upgrades, like a huge gym

An east end recreation centre will undergo some renovations after the federal government diverted $6.3 million to it.
On Wednesday, Minister Gregor Robertson and MP Marie-France Lalonde announced that the Bob MacQuarrie Recreation Complex in Orléans will be getting some upgrades, like a larger gym.
The funding was provided through the Build Communities Strong Fund.
The project includes a new full-sized gym that can be divided, allowing more activities at once. A new reception and customer service area, accessible changerooms, better storage and improvements throughout the building.
“Investments in facilities like the Bob MacQuarrie Recreation Complex are helping build stronger, safer, and more resilient communities for generations to come,” MP Robertson said.
The province and the Canadian government announced major funding in March, aimed at giving municipalities money for housing-related infrastructure.
It was the first to be announced through the federal government’s $51 billion Build Communities Strong Fund and is meant to help municipalities cut development charges, or DCs, by as much as 50 per cent for the next three years.
“Orléans is one of Ottawa’s fastest-growing communities, and investments like this help ensure our neighbourhoods grow with the spaces residents need to connect, stay active, and build a strong sense of community,” Mayor Mark Sutcliffe, City of Ottawa. “This new gymnasium will create more opportunities for residents of all ages and abilities to participate in recreation programs, gather with their neighbours, and enjoy a facility that reflects the needs of our growing community.”
