Man, convicted of ‘brutal’ child-related sexual assault, seen in Smiths Falls

Smiths Falls police are warning the public of a violent, high-risk offender who has been seen in the community.
Officials say they are alerting the public as a “precautionary measure” after Aaron Gilpin, 35, was seen in the town. Police believe he is at an “elevated risk” of re-offending now that he is no longer on conditions of release.
“Although Aaron Gilpin does present a safety risk to the public, his rights are guaranteed under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms Act,” the press release notes.
Gilpin has been seen in parks and gazebos in the area. Police say he has also trespassed from a local Tim Hortons. He has an extensive criminal record dating back to the early 2000s.
According to police, he’s been convicted of “brutal” child-related sexual assault, assault, weapons offences, disarming an officer, break-and-enters, and theft. He’s been in and out of custody for several years.
“Aaron Gilpin came to the recent attention of police after a suspicious person’s call was received at the gazebo area beside town hall,” they said. “Although no criminal offences occurred, it caused concern to the officers.”
Due to his history and likelihood to reoffend, Smiths Falls police are putting his photo out for the public, which they can do under Ontario Regulation 412/23 of the Community Safety and Policing Act of Ontario.
Anyone who has reports about Gilpin should call the Smiths Falls department and not approach him.
