Teen with G2 licence charged going almost double the limit in school zone

An officer in Ottawa’s east end said they saw two vehicles racing through a school zone on Innes Road at a high rate of speed.

It happened on Wednesday around noon where the officer was doing speed enforcement work in the 60 km/h zone. It was near Beatrice-Desloges Catholic High School.

The vehicles were clocked at 117 km/h — nearly double the limit.

The officer was able to stop one of the vehicles, with a 19-year-old behind the wheel with a G2 licence, the press release notes. He’s been charged with stunt driving – racing, prompting an immediate licence suspension and a vehicle impound.

Those caught stunt driving for the first time face a fine of $2,000 and a one-year licence suspension if convicted.

The second vehicle, described as a newer sports car model, possibly a BMW, didn’t stop for police and was seen turning southbound on Provence Avenue.

Officials are asking anyone with information to contact them.

Crossing guard killed in the spring

This is the first school season for those who will not be seeing the “crossing guard with the friendly smile,” in Barrhaven.

Peter Clark, was killed while on duty on March 23. He was struck in a hit-and-run by a vehicle, where a 19-year-old is facing charges. Clark was the guard for Mary Honeywell Public School, and the story of his death shocked people across the nation’s capital.

As a result, police said they have made more of an effort to address safety concerns in school zones, including ramping up enforcement during the back to school period.

Just in the days following Clark’s death, officials said they issued 36 provincial offence notices to drivers, including 14 for disobeying a stop sign and seven for speeding. They also charged one driver for going 79 km/h in a 40 km/h zone on Abbott Street East in Stittsville.

“Road safety is a shared responsibility. Please slow down and obey signage in school zones so our most vulnerable road users can get to their destinations safely,” the statement from police reads.
