Two Greely house fires doused by crews before spreading

Firefighters were called to two separate areas of the Greely community for back-to-back fires; one in a basement and another in a garage.

The first call came in at 9:00 p.m. on Sunday. People were reporting smoke and flames coming from a home in the 500 block of Shoreway Drive.

When fire crews arrived they could see large flames coming from a basement window on one side of the single family home. They also saw an air-conditioning unit had fallen from its brackets out of a window and was engulfed.

Bringing a hose quickly inside the house, another team set up an aerial ladder. They were able to search the house and didn’t find anyone.

About 40 minutes after crews arrived, the blaze was doused, the press release notes. Officials said they were able to contain the fire to a basement office and computer room before it spread.

The teams needed to open sections of the home to extinguish hot spots and used high-pressure fans to get rid of the smoke.

Then on Monday the team was sent back out into the community to the 1200 block of South Beach Boulevard around 7:14 a.m.

There were reports from people that smoke was coming from a garage and the home’s vents. When they went to the garage, firefighters found a vehicle, fuel containers and a barbecue inside.

All six people who live there, and their pets, had evacuated, and crews were able to contain the flames to the garage.

In both incidents, an Ottawa fire investigator was dispatched to determine the cause and origin.
