It’s been exactly 10 years since the Ottawa Titans lifted the coveted Frontier League trophy, after they beat the Evansville Otters 4-0.
The action took place Saturay night, in Game 4, the Titans came out ready to sweep the title. When it was all done, the stands and the field erupted in cheers with fireworks going off and champagne sprayed everywhere.
Pitcher, Ky Hampton, retired the first 16 batters, and allowed only three hits.
“I don’t do that without those guys behind me, I love feeding them ground balls they always back me up,” Hampton said to RogersTV in the midst of the chaos after the win.
Jackie Urbaez launched a 375-foot run, with Myles Smith and AJ Wright brought the score up further. Urbaez then again helped bring Jake Steels home, the Titans led 3-0.
A good defensive play from the home team shut down any offence the Otters were looking to gain, as Smith launched a huge ball from left field to strike out Evansville at home plate.
They put the game out of reach in the eighth after Rainer Nuñez added the insurance to make the game 4-0.
The fans have been behind their team since the beginning of the season when they broke a league-wide 29-year attendance record. The team has seen a 16 per cent increase in attendance compared to the previous season. It’s been a huge boost in morale for the players, who say fans cheering no matter the score brings energy to the ballpark.
Urbaez highlighted that the team plays for the fans.
“We come out here, and they show up every single day, why wouldn’t you want to play in front of them?” he said.
General manager, Bobby Brown, said that building this team for the last five years the win is even sweeter since they’ve come close before but just missed out.
“It’ll probably really hit me tomorrow,” he said.
The team was celebrated outside Ottawa City Hall on Monday. People were asked to bring their Titans pride and help mark the memorable moment.
