Three inmates at the Ottawa Carleton Detention Centre now face charges of first degree murder in connection with the beating death of another inmate.
Marco Michaud, 36, died at hospital last Friday.
He had been in a coma since being savagely beaten while in custody at the jail back on April 11. Three men, all in custody on separate matters, were charged with attempted murder following the assault.
Charges for Mohamed Barkhadle, 32, Pierre Senatus, 22, and Jimmy St. Hilaire, 19, have been upgraded to first degree murder.
Michaud had turned himself into police earlier this year and had been facing a second-degree murder charge, after the victim of an assault, Gerald Leduc, 53, passed away due to injuries suffered in that incident.
