Ottawa, Feds to plant 10K trees in Pinhey’s Point Park

By CityNews Ottawa

Pinhey's Point Park in north Kanata will be getting an upgrade once the ground thaws this spring – 10,000 trees will be planted by the City of Ottawa and Government of Canada.

The municipal-federal partnership through the 2 Billion Trees program – a 2021 Trudeau government initiative to plant as many trees over 10 years – will transform four hectares of open field into permanent forest in the West Carleton-March Ward.

Planting trees will support the City’s Urban Forest Management Plan, Official Plan and Climate Change Master Plan, and contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the fight against climate change.

“I am thrilled that this collaboration between the City of Ottawa and the Government of Canada will bring a new green space for the residents of our ward to enjoy,” stated West Carleton-March Ward Councillor Clarke Kelly in a media release. “It will change the landscape for the better while playing a key role in our City’s efforts to combat climate change.”

The trees selected will be a variety of native species intended to promote biodiversity and ensure the future forest is resilient and adaptable.

Both partners will contribute $178,800 to the project.
