Barrhaven blaze caused by cigarette

By Jenn Pritchard

Ottawa Fire is blaming the careless disposal of smoking material on the massive blaze in Barrhaven on Wednesday.

Crews were called to the 16-unit building on Chapman Mills around 8:30 a.m. for flames spotted coming from the back of the building.

The three-alarm blaze was under control just before noon.

The fire investigator spoke with witnesses and condo residents and determined that the fire was accidental in nature but caused by a cigarette.

40 people have been displaced and damages are pegged at $1,750,000.

The Salvation Army and Red Cross are helping out, while the property management firm is working with the condo owners to get people back in their homes if possible.
