Boathouses set on fire in 1000 Islands

A Quebec man has been charged in a series of fires set on an island in the St. Lawrence River, this past weekend.

Firefighters were called to Grenadier Island, Saturday morning, where fires were reported in two boat houses.

OPP investigated and learned that a boat had been stolen and taken to Grenadier Island, where two boat houses and several antique boats were set on fire.

The damage is estimated at $1 million.

Brent Bercovitch, 35, has been charged with three counts of arson and two counts of theft. He appeared in Brockville court for a bail hearing and was released on numerous conditions.

The investigation continues; anyone with information about the fires is asked to contact Leeds OPP at 613-345-1790 or 1-888-310-1122 or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
