Buck Martinez to return to Blue Jays broadcast booth for 2023 season: report

By CityNews Staff

Baseball broadcaster Buck Martinez will return as Sportsnet’s play-by-play announcer for the Toronto Blue Jays for the 2023 season, according to Bob Elliott.

Martinez has been with Sportsnet calling Blue Jays games since 2010. Sportsnet has not confirmed that Martinez will be back.

News of the 74-year-old reportedly remaining in the broadcast booth comes after Sportsnet parted ways with his long-time partner, Pat Tabler, in December. Dan Shulman is expected to stay in his current position with Sportsnet. Shulman won the Canadian Screen Award for Best Sports Play-by-Play at the 10th Canadian Screen Awards in 2022.

Martinez was diagnosed with cancer in mid-April and took a leave to receive treatment. He returned to the broadcast booth in late July.

He played 17 seasons in the majors as a catcher, including the final six of his career with the Blue Jays from 1981-86. After retirement, he began working as a broadcaster, with a brief stint as manager for the Blue Jays for two years in 2000 and 2001.
