Provincial police are praising the efforts of a bystander who pulled a driver from a sinking vehicle in Cardinal.

Around 7:20 p.m. on Monday, September 20, the Grenville Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a report that a vehicle had entered the St. Lawrence River near Legion Way.

Witnesses told the OPP the driver had lost control and reversed into the water.

Police say a female bystander who was fishing nearby jumped into the water and was able to safely pull the driver out and away from the vehicle as it became submerged.

When police and emergency crews arrived on scene, the driver and bystander had made it to shore unharmed.

The Grenville County OPP has contacted the bystander, who wishes to remain anonymous, and thanked her for her lifesaving efforts. The OPP says her actions likely prevented a tragedy.
