By Alex Black

The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) is crediting bystanders in rescuing a driver after a car broke through the ice of the Rideau River in Manotick.

It happened in the evening hours of Sunday, January 16, and police say bystanders used a kayak and “quick, safe thinking” to rescue the driver, who was uninjured.

Several witnesses and residents posted on Twitter, describing a driver speeding along the ice, and even standing on the vehicle taking selfies as the car went down.

The driver has been charged with careless driving.

The vehicle remains in the river and police are asking curious onlookers no to venture onto the ice for a better view.
