CEO of Registered Nurses Association of Ontario says fast solutions needed to deal with staff shortages

By CityNews Ottawa

The chief executive officer of the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario believes quicker solutions are needed to deal with staffing shortages in hospitals across the province of Ontario.

Dr. Doris Grinspun told The Rob Snow Show on Monday, July 4 that if “we don't fast forward with solutions, we won't know how to come out of this.”

“Right now, Ontario has the lowest registered nurse (RN) population in the country,” said Dr. Grinspun. “Nurses have had to cancel vacations and have been working non stop.”

Dr. Grinspun said there are solutions, including the fact there are 26,000 nurses from other countries who are living across the country who are eager and ready to work.

“We need to process their applications faster,” she added.

She said more nurses are working for agencies, where they have more control on their hours and make more money.

“I look forward to working on solutions,” she said.
