Chair of Ontario COVID-19 Vaccine Distribution Task Force defending rollout

By Alex Goudge

The head of Ontario's COVID-19 Vaccine Distribution Task Force is defending the progress he feels has been made, as the province moves forward with the next phase of its plan.

Retired General Rick Hillier is encouraging people to look to the data when it comes to how well Ontario has done immunizing it's residents.

According to Hillier, at least 650,000 people across the province already receiving their vaccine, and while more supply is on the way, he feels it is redundant to have mass vaccination clinics staffed right now, when there isn't sufficient supply.

“That personality is kind of putting a soldier into battle and saying, 'You don't have any ammunition, so yell 'bang-bang,' we're not doing that,” Hillier explains on CityNews' The Rob Snow Show, Friday, February 26. “So, now we're getting more vaccines and as we get them we will put them into people's arms.”

The retired general also feels the overall situation is improving in Ontario, with 175,000 Pfizer vaccines received Thursday, and 47,000 Moderna vaccines expected, Friday.

The next phase of Ontario's COVID-19 vaccine rollout includes getting shots to residents 80 and older, starting later in March. Residents over 60 should be getting their vaccines in July, according to the province's plan.
