City staff get behind new Chateau Laurier design

By Stuart McGinn

City staff say they're getting behind the newest design for the expansion of the Chateau Laurier.

In a report issued Monday night, staff write that the project's fourth design “is contemporary in expression and proposed to be seven storeys in height, below the eaves line of the hotel roof to allow it to remain the dominant element on the site.”

This design joined the first three proposals, getting hit with a slew of negative feedback from the public, as many people felt the glass structure didn't compliment the historic hotel's stone, castle tone.

Heritage Ottawa even dubbed the design as “the most disgraceful act of heritage vandalism of our generation.”

City staff wrote that the stone and bronze glass addition will compliment the materials in the hotel and the views to the historic building “won't be sullied.”

The design application will still need to make it through three levels of approval at City Hall before getting the official go-ahead.

It will go before the Built Heritage sub-committee June 18, before making it to the planning committee and then city council before the end of the month.
