Class action suit against two nursing home companies claims negligence

By OttawaMatters Staff

A class action lawsuit is being launched against two nursing home companies, over disturbing allegations of negligence.

Medical malpractice lawyer Amani Oakley has filed lawsuits against Extendicare and against Leisureworld, a company now known as Sienna Senior Living, but which also operates under a variety of other names.

In one case, it's alleged an Ottawa woman who resided at West End Villa received such poor care, her leg wound developed maggots.

In another case near Toronto, the lawyer claims caregivers didn't ensure an elderly man ate enough. Photos of the man show multiple gaping bedsores.

Oakley is looking for other families to join the class action lawsuit and is encouraging anyone who feels their family member has not been properly taken care of to get in touch at nursinghomeabuse.ca

A news conference with more details is planned in Toronto, on Thursday.
