Climatologist predicting a more balanced August in Ottawa

By Mike Vlasveld

Following a month that brought a heat wave through Ottawa, and then a massive amount of rain, August is expected to be a lot less extreme.

That's according to Environment Canada Senior Climatologist David Phillips, who told 1310 NEWS' Ottawa Today that there is still a bit of uncertainty in predicting weather patterns for next month, but one thing is for sure: residents can expect a lot less humidity.

“August is typically a little cooler than July,” he explained. “We think it will bring more comfortable conditions, and maybe more a balance of precipitation.”

Listen to the full conversation with David Phillips:

Environment Canada recorded 16 days where the temperature climbed above 30 C in Ottawa this July.

Phillips said August will not get close to that figure.

Last week brought more rain to the capital region than it had seen in the previous seven weeks combined.

Phillips added that the craziest part is, thanks to that downpour, overall precipitation numbers for May, June and July actually average out to look normal.

July 2017 was the wettest month in Ottawa's history. This month didn't reach that same rain level, but will definitely go down as one of the wettest July's in the region's history.
