CNN Travel has included Canada's capital in its list of 23 travel destinations people should visit in the new year.

"It doesn't have Montreal's French flair or Toronto's international oomph, so the Canadian capital can get overlooked," CNN travel experts stated. "That would be a mistake. Graceful and understated, Ottawa has its own draws."

The travel experts noted that the capital hosts two jazz festivals, one in the winter in early February and a summer edition that takes place at the end of June.

Ottawa is the only Canadian city to appear on the list.

Jantine Van Kregten, director of communications for Ottawa Tourism told The Sam Laprade Show on Jan. 5 that Ottawa appearing on a CNN list gives the capital city a lot of credibility in the eyes of potential visitors and travellers.

"I don't know what CNN's process was, but they did a pretty good job," she said. "We have many great reasons for people to visit Ottawa. We have so much going on."

Also mentioned are the Ottawa Senators and the Ottawa 67's for those who love hockey.

Ottawa is home to the Rideau Canal, which turns into the world's largest skating rink in the winter time.

"The Rideau Canal turns into the world's largest skating rink from sometime in January to late February or early March, depending on ice thickness," travel experts said. "It's free and accessible 24/7. When it's warmer, it's a great spot for people and boat watching."

Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe showed his support for Ottawa Tourism, and was thrilled to see that the nation's capital made the list.
