After months of missing city council and committee meetings, Innes Ward Councillor Jody Mitic has been officially granted a leave of absence.
This comes after he delivered a written notice to the clerk that he cannot attend committee and council meetings "for the foreseeable future." Mitic included medical documentation with his notice.
"Jody is experiencing some challenges and he needs that time away," said Mayor Jim Watson. "When he's well to come back, then he's back around the council table until the end of his term."
Generally, if a councillor misses several months of council and committee meetings, they forfeit their seat. Council decided to approve the leave of absence so Mitic could keep his seat for the duration of the term.
"I certainly appreciate his participation at City Hall, but he's gotta take care of himself and his family first," Watson stated.
In the meantime, Cumberland Ward Councillor Stephen Blais, Orléans Ward Councillor Bob Monette, and Beacon Hill-Cyrville Ward Councillor Tim Tierney, will be taking over the files from Mitic's ward.
The City Clerk has stated Mitic will continue to receive his salary and benefits.
In March, Mitic stated he won't be seeking re-election in October's municipal vote.
