“COVID is not going away”: Dr. Robert Cushman

By CityNews Ottawa

The acting medical officer of health for the Renfrew County and District Health believes COVID-19 is not going away, and urges people to go out and get whatever vaccines and boosters they are eligible for.

Dr. Robert Cushman told The Sam Laprade Show on Thursday, June 30, that COVID-19 could eventually displace influenza as new variants of concern continue to emerge.

“There are concerns that vaccinations aren't perfect,” he said. “But it's better to be vaccinated than not vaccinated.”

While the Omicrom subvariants BA.4 and BA.5 are a cause for concern, Dr. Cushman said there are plans to offer boosters in the fall.

“For some people, this will be mean shot number three, or four, and for some, it will be five,” he added.

Dr. Cushman said any new variant is a concern, leading to more cases being detected.

“The issue is how transmissible are the variants and how serious they are,” he said.
