There are critical injuries reported following a plane crash on Highway 401 east of Cornwall.

The Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry (SD&G) Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to the crash involving a Cessna 150 just before 8:15 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 5.

The plane crashed into the centre median of the highway in front of the Bainsville ONroute, near the Ontario-Québec boarder, in South Glengarry Township.

The initial investigation shows the airplane may have experienced a mechanical problem after departing from the Salaberry-de-Valleyfield Airport in Québec.

The two male occupants of the plane, aged 29 and 36, were taken to hospital, one by ORNGE Air Ambulance in critical condition. The other was taken to hospital by land ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries.

Highway 401 was closed both westbound and eastbound from the Québec border to marker 825 for roughly eight hours, but has since reopened.

The Transportation Safety Board (TSB) said it has dispatched a team of investigators to the crash scene to assist with the ongoing investigation.

Hydro One crews also responded to the scene due to some hydro wires which were damaged in the crash.
