CRTC announces major changes for radio listeners in Ottawa

By Anil Jhalli

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) announced on Dec. 7 some big changes for radio listeners in some parts of the country.

The CRTC has announced the end of its 'hit music' policy for Ottawa, Gatineau and Montreal.

The policy limited the amount of popular music English radio stations could play and was designed to protect French language radio stations who are required to play of minimum amount of French language music.

The change means English language radio stations in National Capital Region and in Montreal no longer face limits on playing songs that are considered “hits” by the CRTC.

“The radio industry is in a transition period and is competing with digital services for listeners,” said Ian Scott, chairperson and chief executive officer for the CRTC. “A flexible approach will help it remain competitive, while ensuring that Canadians continue to have access to the content that serves their needs and interests. Radio is a very important medium to entertain, inform, discover new artists and ensure that local voices are heard.”
