Union president issues letter to Carleton students

By OttawaMatters Staff

The president of CUPE 2424 has issued a letter to students at Carleton University, as the union's strike enters its second week.

Roughly 850 administrative, library, and technical workers are striking after the union failed to reach a deal with their employer. The main sticking point in negotiations has been pension benefits.

In his letter to students, Jerrett Clark says the union appreciates their patience and encourages them to speak with members on the picket lines to better understand what they're going through.

Clark also writes that some of the striking members have been subject to verbal and physical abuse, as they walk the lines at the entrances to the campus entraces on Colonel By Drive and Bronson. He says there's no excuse for those actions.

The union encourages students to demand that Carleton return to the negotiation table.
