OTTAWA - Three downtown shelters have put out a joint statement, after an online petition started to call for the shelters' closures.

The petition claims business and tourism has been negatively affected by having the three shelters in the ByWard Market.

The joint statement, by the Ottawa Mission, the Salvation Army and the Shepherds of Good Hope, list their services to Ottawa's most vulnerable, but makes no mention of the petition or the criticism of the concentration of shelters in the market.

The statement says the three shelters are proud of the role they play in the ByWard Market.
