Environment Canada is putting Ottawa under a heat warning as excessive heat and humidity continues.
Afternoon temperatures on Monday, June 28, are expected to be around 31 degrees Celsius (C). The weather agency says humidex values should be near 40 C on Monday as well.
An overnight low near 20 degrees is forecast, providing little relief from the heat.
There is a possibility that the heat and humidity could reach similar levels on Tuesday.
A heat warning had already been issued for other areas across eastern Ontario.
Environment Canada says hot and humid air can also bring deteriorating air quality and can result in the Air Quality Health Index to approach the high risk category.
Extreme heat affects everyone. The risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors.
Residents are asked to watch for the effects of heat illness: swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and the worsening of some health conditions. Pets and people should never be left inside a parked vehicle during a heat warning.
Heat warnings are issued when very high temperature or humidity conditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion.
