Extreme cold continues into Saturday across Ottawa

By Mike Vlasveld

Temperatures across Ottawa are expected to stay extremely low to start the weekend.

Environment Canada has issued an extreme cold warning for the region, as wind chill values are expected to reach between -34 degrees Celsius (C) and -40 C. Minimum temperatures are forecasted between -26 C and -29 C.

The weather agency says the wind chill is expected to moderate during the day Friday, January 21, 2022, however the cold with wind chills near -35 C is expected to return again Friday night into Saturday morning.

Risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter.

Environment Canada suggests dressing in layers that can be removed and the outer layer should be wind resistant.

The City of Ottawa issued a frostbite warning on Thursday night. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill. Watch for colour changes on fingers and toes, pain, numbness, a tingling sensation, or swelling. If present, move indoors and begin warming.
