Father looks to community to help raise money for his son’s illness

By CityNews Staff

For the past few years, Gregory Brown has been fundraising for his son Jack. However, the father is now battling high-risk cancer, leaving him unable to work and without private insurance to cover his son's life-sustaining medical supplies.

“I'm on my fifth lease of life,” Brown told The Sam Laprade Show on Friday, Aug.12. “Initially, they gave me six months…I have a lot of positive energy around me…and I'm just thankful to wake up every day.”

Brown said that Jack is a happy boy despite being unable to communicate. He taught himself the Russian alphabet, and his eyes light up with joy when he sees his older sister. But the 13-year-old was also born with a rare and life-limiting disorder called CHARGE syndrome that requires full-time nursing.

Brown is often on the road collecting items for his ongoing bottle drive that helps the family raise money for Jack, and he said the community has been gracious in donating their bottles.

Those interested in helping Jack and his dad can donate to their GoFundMe page, donate items to their annual silent auction or buy a ticket for their guitar raffle.

“A good friend of mine…he took me aside one time, and he believes that God gave me a purpose in life,” Brown said. “The illness that I have has made me focus on my son Jack…that is my life's focus. And I absolutely love doing it.”
