Firefighter treated, two families displaced following Glabar Park fire in west end

A fire investigator is on scene to determine the cause of the blaze.

One firefighter was treated on the scene of a blaze that happened in the city’s west end.

Ottawa Fire Services said they received a 911 call reporting smoke and flames coming from a basement apartment at 935 Blythdale Rd. at the corner of Strathmore Boulevard in Glabar Park at about 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

The occupants from the upstairs apartment had safely evacuated but reported that the family in the basement may still have been inside.

Firefighters arrived on scene and encountered heavy smoke throughout the structure.

They also searched the basement but no one besides the firefighting team extinguishing the fire was in the home.

The fire was under control shortly after 5 p.m.

Firefighters remained on location to ensure the fire had not extended into other areas, and to ventilate all remaining smoke from the building.

While working on the fireground, however, one firefighter experienced a medical emergency. They were treated by paramedics and transported to hospital.

The occupants of the two apartments in the home will be displaced.

A fire investigator is on scene to determine the cause of the blaze.
