UPDATE: Ottawa and Gatineau are no longer under a freezing rain warning.

Environment Canada has issued a freezing rain warning for Ottawa and Gatineau.

A brief period of freezing rain is expected Thursday morning, but precipitation will transition to rain as temperatures rise to the above freezing mark.

Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become slippery due to the freezing rain.

Environment Canada is encouraging residents to take extra caution while walking or driving in affected areas. Drivers are also asked to slow down in slippery conditions, watch for taillights, and maintain a safe following distance.

Freezing rain warnings are issued when rain falling in sub-zero temperatures creates ice build-up and icy surfaces.
