Gun control debate hits Ottawa

By Mike Vlasveld

Representatives from the Coalition for Gun Control, legal experts, victims and women's groups will participate in an anti-gun rally on Parliament Hill.

Tuesday at 1:30 p.m., those groups are expected to speak on the proposed new federal gun legislation expected to be tabled in the House of Commons this week.

Director of Advocacy YWCA Colette Prevost will be talking about on the issue of intimate partner violence and particular vulnerabilities of women living in rural and remote communities, as it relates to the need for strong firearm legislation.

That will be followed by Priscilla de Villiers, mother of Nina de Villiers, who was abducted and killed with a legally-owned unrestricted rifle in Burlington in 1991.

Meanwhile, President of the National Firearms Association Sheldon Clare told Ottawa Today with Mark Sutcliffe additional background checks, powers for the RCMP and registration at the point of sale among other proposed rules, will not make any difference.

He blamed bullying in schools for a spike in gun violence across the country. Clare added that Canadians need to do a better job making people responsible for their behaviour.

He believes new gun legislation is a political ploy to pander to voters because of recent tragic events at high schools in the US.
