Heat warning continues for Ottawa and surrounding areas

By Perushka Gopalkista

Extreme heat is expected to continue this week with temperatures expected to reach the high 30s in some of parts of the province.

Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for the rest of the week, which applies to most of the region including the Ottawa Valley.

Temperatures on Tuesday, July 19 are expected to reach 30 C but with the humidex it could feel like 37 C.

While these conditions may be high, CityNews meteorologist Jill Taylor said these conditions are not usual for this time of year.

She added that the extreme heat can affect those with underlying conditions, and can increase the air quality health index to a high risk category.

“Hot and humid air can also bring poor air quality,” she said. “And people already with certain illnesses will feel it in their throats, or have some coughing and have difficulty breathing for some people.”

Those who are working outside this week, Taylor added, should be aware of possible heat-related illnesses such as exhaustion, fainting, cramps and rashes. The heat can also worsen some health conditions.

Ottawa Public Health (OPH) is recommending those without access to air-conditioning spaces can head to one of the city's drop-in respite centres to cool off.
