Heat warning issued for Ottawa

The City of Ottawa has issued a heat warning for the area and as a result, will be opening emergency cooling centres.

The city issued the warning for Sunday and will last until Tuesday, June 8.

Emergency cooling centres will open on Sunday, however, emergency and protective services is working closely with Ottawa Public Health to continuously monitor the situation and is ready to adjust the city’s response measures, the city said in a memo Sunday.

For priority populations, respite centres and day programs are available as potential options to seek relief from the heat. These operate Monday to Friday, although two of the day programs — St. Luke’s and Centre 507 — also have weekend hours.

At this time, OPH has reached out to service providers of priority populations to implement hot weather protective policies and is communicating key messages to help resident with heat relief options.

Residents are being advised to follow public health guidance, seek shelter in cool spaces, make use of the city’s splash pads and shaded outdoor spaces, reduce outdoor activity, taking a cool shower and drinking water.
