Hike for Hospice Care Ottawa going virtual during COVID-19 pandemic

By Mike Vlasveld

Hospice Care Ottawa is still hoping to raise funds through one of its marquee annual events, even though it has to go online due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Hike for Hospice Care Ottawa will be a virtual event this May 9, to ensure the organization's clients, staff, volunteers and supporters are safe while practicing physical distancing.

“With our aging population, demand for our services continues to increase,” says Lisa Sullivan, the organization’s executive director. “This year will be tougher than ever for us to raise $2-million needed annually to support the palliative and end-of-life clients at Hospice. We recognize this may be a challenging financial year for many due to job lay-offs, cutbacks and the financial market uncertainty. If you are able to, please consider supporting the Virtual Hike. Together we can ensure compassionate palliative and end-of-life care is available to those when comfort matters most.”

Last year's Hike for Hospice raised $127,650 thanks to more than 500 participants, donors and sponsors.

Residents can join the virtual hike by registering online, sharing their online fundraising page with friends and family, and completing their 5 km trek on or before May 9.

To register or make a donation visit hospicecareottawa.ca or call 613-260-2906 ext. 222.
