The popular Hog's Back Swing Bridge will be closed starting May 17 at 8 p.m to all traffic including pedestrians, cyclists and motor vehicles for further maintenance on the structure's closing system.

The National Capital Commission (NCC) says the bridge will re-open on Thursday, May 17th at 9 p.m.

"During the closure, travellers will not be able to use Hog’s Back Road to cross the river and canal," the NCC says. "A detour will be in place for motor vehicles. Pedestrians and cyclists will be able to use the lock gate crossing during the closure. This crossing is not universally accessible, therefore strollers and bicycles will need to be lifted for three steps."

River Ward Coun. Riley Brockington in a tweet says, "the road will be closed between Colonel By Drive and Prince of Wales, allowing for local traffic at the Rideau Canoe Club and apartment tower".

The NCC is urging users of the bridge to exercise caution and respect working crews and equipment during the closure, also asking residents to please obey signage and flag persons at the site.

The bridge has been closed for extended periods since the summer of 2019 for construction and other issues.

The most recent closures were in July and November of 2021.
