#HumboldtStrong: Grieving community appreciates messages of support

By OttawaMatters Staff

As grief and shock continues to blanket the community of Humboldt, Saskatchewan, the town's mayor is expressing his appreciation for an outpouring of support from across the country, and around the world.

As word of Friday's devastating crash spread, messages of support began to trickle, then stream, then pour in.

Mayor Robert Muench said all are very much appreciated, and many have been incredibly moving.

“A message from a young five-year old in Ontario I read this morning, about how he wrote a poem from a player's perspective. You know, it's heart warming to read some of that stuff, ” he told Mark Sutcliffe on 1310 NEWS' special #HumboldtStrong program Monday.

The Humboldt Broncos were established in the seventies and the club has a connection with another Saskatchewan community scarred by a similar tragedy — Swift Current.

In 1986, the WHL team's bus was involved in a crash that killed four of that team's players.

Muench was talking about that connection with a surviving member of that team, Sheldon Kennedy.

“We were talking earlier about Swift Current and their tragedy and how it's come to Humboldt now. The Broncos started out in the early seventies and they got their original jerseys second-hand from the Swift Current Broncos and that's how we got the name Broncos,” he said.

The Broncos and all the players are woven into the fabric of Humboldt, Muench added.
