Ottawa's coroner has announced the date for an inquest into the 2016 death of a man who was in custody at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre on Innes Road.

Justin St. Amour, 31, died in hospital on December 8, 2016, after being transferred from the jail where he had hung himself in his cell.

An inquest is mandatory under the province's Coroners Act.

The inquest will examine the events surrounding St. Amour's death and the jury may make recommendations to try to prevent future similar deaths.

Nine days have been set aside for the inquest, which is scheduled to begin on Monday, April 8 at Ottawa City Hall.
