Inquest into the death of a Canadian Forces member begins in Ottawa

An inquest into the death of Jason Renato Simon begins Tuesday at Ottawa City Hall. 

Simon died at his residence on February 15, 2016, just weeks after attempting suicide.

The 20-year-old was in the process of hanging himself on January 29, when he made a last-minute call to a suicide hotline. 

Police and paramedics attended the scene where they broke down the door and saved his life. 

Simon had been making use of mental health services in the weeks leading up to his suicide. 

Born and raised in Windsor, Ontario, Simon was in his third year of criminology studies at Carleton University, and was also a reservist with the 30th Field Artillery Regiment. 

The regional supervising coroner for east region announced in a statement that the inquest will, "examine the events surrounding Mr. Simon's death," and that the jury may, "make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths". 

The inquest is expected to last nine days, and will hear from approximately 25 witnesses.
