Internet privacy expert calling out Uber and driver in posting of Senators’ conversation

As most taxis these days are equipped with dashcam technology, their riders see signs telling them their conversations may be recorded, and it's time for ride sharing services to adopt similar policies.

That was the message from Cyber Security and Internet Privacy Expert Ritesh Kotak on 1310 NEWS' The Rick Gibbons Show.

A video surfaced online Monday, showing seven Ottawa Senators' players riding in an Uber vehicle in Phoenix, having a conversation about problems with their team.

Kotak said anyone can set up a dashcam in their car for $100 or less and post content to the Internet, and once it's there, there really is no 'delete' button.

“I just hope that there's a responsibility on organizations, and drivers themselves, to ensure that they follow the guidelines, they respect people's privacy, especially in a social-cyber-digital world because this can have a serious impact,” explained Kotak. “Right now, it's an off-the-cuff conversation with members of the Ottawa Senators, but it could be a private conversation between husband and spouse — what about between lawyers and clients and attorney-client privilege and all the stuff that comes into that, so we need better guidelines.”

Kotak believes, unfortunately, this will not be the last case of what is seen as a breach of privacy in this type of scenario.

He added that the sharing economy is growing so fast, that it's kind of like the wild west in a way that proper rules have yet to be put in place.
