Former hostage Joshua Boyle has a court appearance scheduled for Friday.

Boyle, 34, faces 19 charges including nine counts of assault, as well as charges of sexual assault and forcible confinement.

Boyle and his wife were taken hostage five years ago while backpacking in Afghanistan.

The couple's three children were born while they were being held captive.

Freed in October 2017 in a military operation, the family returned to Canada, and settled in Ottawa.

Ottawa Police arrested Boyle in January and laid 15 charges, which were later withdrawn and replaced with 19 new charges.

Boyle has been undergoing a 60 day psychiatric assessment in Brockville, which was extended following a court appearance in late March.
