Lanark County backs call to reduce speed on Highway 15 near Franktown school

By Alex Black

Lanark County is backing the principal of Calvary Christian Academy in his plan to improve safety near the school.

At a county council meeting on Wednesday, December 1, councillors heard a presentation from Tom Bourne, highlighting concerns from parents and staff about the safety of a stretch of roadway near the school.

The entrance of the school is located on a bend in Highway 15 where the speed limit is 80 km/hr.

“We don't understand why, at a school entrance, the speed is 80 km/hr,” Bourne said. “Each day when the 100 families and students leave at 3:30 p.m., we hold our breath with concern. We are all very concerned that there is going to be an accident before long and it could be fatal.”

Bourne added that efforts to resolve the issue with Ministry of Transportation (MTO) have been unsuccessful so far.

Council voted to write a letter of support to the MTO, requesting that explaining the need for a community safety zone near the school.
