Local organizations are trying to help outfit Ukrainian newcomers for winter

By CityNews Staff

Today is Ukrainian Independence day and an opportunity to reflect on the resilience and bravery Ukrainians have shown the world. It's also a chance to ask how Canadians can continue to support those who have fled the war.

Olenka Bastian, a volunteer at the Ukrainian Canadian Congress Ottawa Branch (UCC), told The Sam Laprade Show on Aug. 24 that the most significant hurdle UCC is facing is preparing the newcomers for winter, with many of them unable to pack jackets or warm clothing before coming.

“So that's the next hurdle, is making sure that some of these people are outfitted and giving those opportunities for them to not have to spend money on new clothes,” she said.

Bastian also opened a volunteer-run store in the Westgate Shopping Centre called Maidan Market, where they help support Ukrainian newcomers by providing clothing, food and connections to other Ukrainians. So far, the store has seen over 2,000 newcomers come through its doors.

Bastian said it's a positive but emotional experience welcoming Ukrainian refugees to Ottawa.

Some Ukrainians have always wanted to come to Canada — albeit not through such sad circumstances — while some are in limbo, waiting for the day they can return home to their loved ones, Bastian said.

Starting in September, the Maidan Market is collecting jackets, warm thermal underwear, hats and gloves to help and is partnering with the Ottawa Snowsuit Fund to help provide Ukrainian children with proper winter gear.
