Mayor Mark Sutcliffe to focus on family, work-life balance while working with new council

By Perushka Gopalkista

Mayor Mark Sutcliffe will be bringing a different approach to Ottawa City Hall—a work-life balance, that is.

Sutcliffe joined Sam Laprade Show on Thursday, Nov. 17, and while he expressed his excitement to work with the new city council, he will be prioritizing a balance between his private family life and mayoral duties.

He explained that he won't be doing things exactly the same things as his predecessor Jim Watson, such as attending all community events. He said that Watson was known to attend dozens of community events, especially on weekends, but Sutcliffe explained it's his family life that comes first.

“I'm very grateful for the long list of invitations that I've received,” he explained, adding that he's already attended a few events. “So, we're doing our best to sort through of all them all and accommodate as many as we can.”

But when it comes to tackling key issues, he said that he's looking forward to working with the new city council.

“There's a lot of work to do,” he said, adding that expectations, especially as the new mayor, are high. “We're not going to be perfect but I think every one of us on city council really cares about this city and about representing the interests of every resident of Ottawa and making the city better for everyone.”

Sutcliffe added that building a good relationship with Ottawa's new police chief, Eric Stubbs, is key especially when it comes to tackling other issues such as policing and community safety—issues that were at the top of Sutcliffe's mayoral campaign.

“It's really important that we have a good working relationship,” he said. “We've already had some conversations about how we implement some of those commitments,”
