Melnyk pledges to rebuild Senators

By Jason White

The owner of the Ottawa Senators pledges a multi-year rebuild of the team, in an online video and an open letter to fans.

Eugene Melnyk admits that the team's performance last year was “horrible,” and says the team must get back to winning, and with more consistency.

“We must build a team that rejoins the elite and competes for the Cup every season,” Melnyk writes in an open letter in this morning's newspapers.

“We will do everything in our power to make this a reality,” Melnyk pledges.

Without naming names, Melnyk says the team currently has a solid core of leadership and will build under that with new prospects.

“We're loaded up now with draft picks for the next four, five, six years,” Melnyk says in a video with Senators defenceman Mark Borowiecki.

Melnyk also said that he's not going anywhere, pledging the team would stay in Ottawa and that he would be a part of the Senators for a “long, long time.”
