A mix of snow and ice is in the forecast for Ottawa and Smiths Falls.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement calling for a brief band of snow, mixed with ice pellets, to move through the area during the morning hours of Wednesday, November 17.

The weather service says the snow and ice pellets will then transition into freezing rain during the later morning or early afternoon.

The freezing rain is expected to continue for several hours through the afternoon, before changing to rain as the temperature climbs.

Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots are likely to become icy due to freezing rain, and Environment Canada says power outages are possible due to ice build-up.

The exact amount of snow and freezing rain accumulation is unclear at this point.
