Ministry of Labour issues stop-work order for local construction site

By Alex Black

The Ontario Ministry of Labour has issued a stop-work order at a Claridge Construction site near Dow's Lake.

Paramedics responded to the site at Carling Avenue and Preston Street on Friday afternoon, where a worker had fallen from the seventh floor to the fifth floor.

A forming panel had tipped, leading to the fall. The company has complied with an order to ensure materials were stacked to prevent tipping.

However, the stop-work order remains in place until the construction company, Bellai Brothers Construction, can put a fall protection system in place.

The investigation by the Ministry of Labour continues.

It's up to the construction company whether or not to permanently shut down the site, which is no stranger to accidents.

Two years ago, a construction worker died at the site when he was hit by a falling slab of ice. (link)
